We will lead you to the very heart of the Sienese tradition. We will tell you the story of the horse race Palio, that takes place on the most beautiful and representative square in town, Piazza del Campo twice a year. We will talk you about the protagonists of this famous event: the horses, the jockeys, the evolution of the race during the centuries and its meaning at present. The 17 “Contrade”(the medieval districts of the town) are involved in the race. Everyone has its own symbol, a motto, a church, a “Società di Contrada” (which is the main point of social aggregation for the district), a museum and a fountain for the Contrada baptism. Palio is more than a four-day festival in Siena, it's real life that a Sienese experiences 365 days a year. Let us guide you from the Campo to some of our contrade, through the narrow streets to the panoramic corners and to the best known monuments. The two churches Santa Maria in Provenzano and the Duomo Santa Maria Assunta cannot be missed., It's there that the winning Contrada sings the thanksgiving song to Mary soon after the race. The two races, on July 2nd and August 16th, are dedicated to her.
