This is a sightseeing guided tour of San Gimignano for first time visitors, that starts at Porta San Giovanni, the southern gate built on the XIIth century city walls. The main street was once part of the ancient pilgrim's route to Rome, the famous “Via Francigena”. San Gimignano soon became a rich town, thanks to its location on that important road. This great road facilitated trade, in which the locals were able to sell the locally produced high-quality saffron. On the two sides of the street the bricks and stones of ancient palaces will guide us to Piazza della Cisterna first, then to the Duomo square to visit Collegiata and its amazing frescoes. Beside Palazzo del Podestà and all around the monumental towers of the ancient city, merchants show us their power of the past. Some of the “torri” still keep curious names like Torre del Diavolo. On the other side of the hill, close to San Matteo gate we will visit Sant'Agostino church. Inside we will admire the sixteenth century frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli representing Saint Augustine's life. Along the way we suggest you a little stop at one of the many wine shops, to try a glass of the local white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
Suggested entrances : either Collegiata or Palazzo del Podestà
